In Fog
02:52
|
|||
In fog I awake.
Wet, I am emerging from the
deep, dark, blue, black water. Slowly
I rise
as behind a whale is sinking.
Did I filter through briny baleen?
Did the whale allow this
escaping?
Slowly, purposefully I wade the blue, black water.
The future withdrew from my thinking
In fog. I awake.
Cold, I hear crunching gravel underfoot.
My foot. My feet.
Slowly walking a long, narrow, white, gray gravel path
a spine under an arch of
boughs
heavy with leaf and dew.
Slowly, purposefully walking.
The past will withdraw from my thinking.
A sylvan path
Ending in glade
Standing in shadow
Leviathan looms

Cave In

On Waveland and Ashland / We Live / First Floor
The Second Apartment / of mine / that street
Centipedes made caves / inside / our home
Dry cleaning was left / at the store
Blue Bowl an open air tomb
For insects who couldn’t climb the smooth glass
Cookie Cake was great when we stayed up late
at the green stained table with the rocky leg
Head out west to green tartan couch
Monopoly money strewn across the carpet floor
when the little fists would fly I’d try to cover my eyes
And hoped I wouldn’t hurt you any more
I was in LA for work and stayed a few extra days
I wanted to see your new place and explore the town
Sitting at Crawfords with hot chicken and mac and cheese
A tall boy sweating in the desert heat
Feeling full, but eating more
laughter slides across the greasy floor

Before Rain
04:59
|
|

Climbing creation / Wine as our pay
Clearly alone / in thundering decay
in passing it felt alright
Energy
Decline
Bleeding horizon / orange goodbye
Tangled in lost smog / blundering sigh
in passing it felt alright
Energy
Decline
In the Sea of Serenity
a frigid slap
Divers’ response
cold and bracing
In a vacuum I have three seasons
Overgrown I went elsewhere
I preferred it

Onshore
03:16
|
|

Facing west, waiting for a sunrise
Proactively passive
Wait and see (don’t want to miss it)
Don’t fall asleep yet
Water everywhere and not a drop to drink
Below the bike path, before the concrete
Tantalus grins: “first time?”
I nod, disturbing the albatross
starring blankly at me
Green flash lasts for no longer than 2 seconds
Do not blink
Don’t want to miss it
Sodium Vapors drown a million transmissions
18 wheels carry the sum of their vibrations
the last unfurled warning this time of night
Reverse the canal. Pollute a different body
I am a liquid
I hold the form of my container
Pour me so I may seep down
and chase the receding water table
Leave sentiments in the sediments
Yesterday’s rain, a partial payment
Forget how to repent
Old gods crave adoration
Sleep on it
Wait and see

Alpenglow

There is not an exit
So I do not leave
and risk sliding down the shoulder
a glacial tale old ice scatters
Purple dusk in the switchback frame
Golden light escapes a windowpane
Hunching over a steep incline
In thin air I gasp “slow down”
The hissing winds
A kettle without steam
in the evening ash
embers still glow
I look past
Lighthouse misremembered
Release the beholder
My lungs smolder
The midnight shadows
taunt “Stay by the flame”
Trees multiply while
they mumble my name
I stay tame
Airy hands encourage momentum
up the trail where echoes release
Did you think there was someone waiting
for you way up here?
It is beginning to get dark
So I go slow
